Protecting The Cittern Reviews
Protecting the Cittern is a very heart wrenching tale of a father who spent his life being cruel to those who loved him most because as a young man himself, thsoe who mattered most to him were enormous disappointments. Author John Cammalleri does an outstanding job of keeping the story moving. His characters come alive from the very beginning of the story and you can't help but root for them to come to terms with the tragedies that befall them. The cittern, a musical instrument, could well be a metaphor for the music Cammalleri plays with the words he writes.
I recommend this book to anyone that likes a story well told.
Len Serafino, Author of Back to Newark
John Cammalleri shows he has a gift for writing dialogue devoid of wasted words. His first novel, "Protecting the Cittern" (iUniverse, $12.95), is loaded with paragraph after paragraph of tight descriptions, earthy dialogue and solid storytelling.
The novel concerns Savino "Sammy" Giordano, who emigrated from Italy to New Jersey around 1947 with the promise of having his own barber shop - his cherished ambition - if he marries the unappealing daughter of an influential friend's brother.
Locked in a marriage he really does not want, he fathers two beautiful children, yet becomes an angry and inconsiderate head of the household.
What happens to him and the family, as told through the voice of his son, Tony, is the subject of this mini tour de force of the life of an Italian immigrant covering almost 80 years.
A rare old musical instrument, a cittern, holds a surprise ending in this intense family tale
Gene Hull, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers
John Cammalleri's novel, Protecting the Cittern, is a fascinating read and a modern day morality tale. The author's crisp, descriptive writing skill clearly evokes the protagonist, Tony Giordano's sensitive and intelligent reactions to a bitter and intemperate father, a man with his own unresolved past disappointments and secrets. Born in Naples, Italy, Savino (Sammy) Giordano was the son of a brutal man, a low-level enforcer of the Naples Camorra which is to Naples what the Mafia is to Sicily. The novel's surprise ending grabs you by the throat and never lets go. Protecting the Cittern is a reading experience not to be missed.
